Sannicola is a municipality of ca. 6,000 inhabitants located on the Ionian side of Salento, it includes the hamlets of Chiesanuova and San Simone, as well as a large part of the coastal resort of Lido Conchiglie, and was established in 1908 due to detachment from the municipality of Gallipoli. From a meteorological point of view, Sannicola is part of the territory of the lower Salento which has a purely Mediterranean climate, with mild winters and hot humid summers. In the Byzantine period the whole area was called until the eighteenth century with the Greek name of Rodogallo, which meant "place of beautiful roses". The Salento dialect is very much spoken of and is influenced by the dominations and peoples established in this territory over the centuries: Messapians, Greeks, Romans, Byzantines, Lombards, Normans, Albanians, French and Spanish.
The particular strategic position a few kilometers from Gallipoli constitutes an authentic point of strength, reaching quite easily the seaside resorts of Punta Pizzo, Baia verde, Rivabella and Lido Conchiglie. The entire coast boasts a low and very long beach composed of white dunes, made up of splendid sandy beaches with crystal clear water very popular in summer, and is interspersed with cliffs that open up to sandy shores and hidden corners.
