Territory:

The name Lonato is believed by some scholars to derive from Lona, a Celtic term meaning small lake. Traces of Roman settlements exist in the areas of Monte Mario and Pozze. The first human settlements on stilts dating back to the Bronze Age (1800 BC) were established in this area. This presence is documented by artifacts found in the Polada-Lavagnone and Palude Lunga areas during archaeological excavations.

The town was destroyed in 909 by the Hungarians, as evidenced by Emperor Berengario's diploma, but was later rebuilt and fortified. Throughout history, Lonato had various rulers who claimed ownership of the town, first as part of the Municipium of Verona and later as a fortified village or fortress. In 1516, Lonato came under the rule of the Republic of Venice.

In 1796, Napoleon Bonaparte entered Lonato victorious after defeating the Austrians led by Field Marshal Würmser in the Battle of Castiglione. With the victory of the Franco-Piedmontese forces over the Austrians at Madonna della Scoperta in June 1859, the town became part of the Kingdom of Italy.
